Dark Is Rising

Coyote 2

The following is an excerpt from the first installment/chapter of the aforementioned “Coyote”. Please Enjoy!

A small set of prints darts across the arid landscape. Sand blown by an as yet imperceptible wind scatters across cracked clay. It lingers in the air like haze on a foggy morning, obscuring the distant mountains. A coyote, its form frail and emaciated, is on something’s trail. The sky is gray but the sun’s influence makes the air burn to breath. Still, it’s a better time to hunt than broad daylight in the desert. The coyote comes to a small overhang in a large mass of rock. It starts pawing at a spot seemingly satisfied with its trekking. It begins clawing and digging almost in a frenzy. It gets faster and faster. It starts nipping into the hole it just dug despairing to grab something in its mouth. It rips a large femur from the immutable soil and wields it triumphantly raising it in the air. The bone is bleached yellow by the sun and sand and the coyote crushes it in its jaw. Frantically it chews but the bone gives way to splinter. Light as feathers, the shards of bone float away into the storm.

The idea is that each chapter will start following this specific coyote doing other things. The rest of the book will follow a guy called Warren who finds the corpse this coyote was digging up and a bunch of money with it. He is being trailed by a hunter called Coyote (this may get too confusing but the name is cool so oh well?). The world around these characters is grim but it is fantasy/western/weird west so Coyote has magic detective powers.

I am having a ton of fun writing this! Hopefully I will have more to share soon.
